Gilbarto Marla Bridge

Gilbarto Marla Bridge

A Bridge Of Love And LegacyIn the picturesque town of Putao, nestled in the heart of the Kachin state, a tale of love, charity, and legacy unfolds. This story involves two high-profile business personalities, Dr. Gilbert Chua from Singapore and his loving wife Dr. Khin Marla from Myanmar, whose philanthropic efforts have left a lasting impression on the community.

Dr. Khin Marla, a native of the Kachin state and also the founder of Myanmar Kindness Foundation(MKF) , and her husband, Dr. Gilbert Chua, were known for their love for the people of Kachin state and their dedication to charitable causes. Their frequent visits to Myitkyina and Putao were not just about exploring its stunning landscapes but were also driven by a desire to give back to the community that Dr. Khin Marla called home.

One of the couple’s primary concerns was the difficulty the locals faced due to the lack of proper public transportation infrastructure in Putao. Touched by the people’s hardships, they expressed their wish to donate a bridge, aiming to alleviate the transportation woes of the locals.

However, a tragic turn of events unfolded on 22nd June 2022, when Dr. Gilbert Chua passed away. Despite the immense grief, Dr. Khin Marla remained resolute in fulfilling their shared dream. The bridge was more than just a means to improve transportation; it was a symbol of her enduring love and a tribute to her late husband. Determined to honor her husband’s memory, Dr. Khin Marla decided to move forward with the bridge donation. This act of generosity not only fulfilled their shared vision but also served as a testament to their love and commitment to the people of Putao. The bridge stands today as a symbol of Dr. Gilbert Chua’s legacy and Dr. Khin Marla’s unwavering love for her late husband. It serves as a constant reminder of the couple’s shared compassion for the people of Putao and their dedication to making a difference in their lives.

The Gilbarto Marla Bridge (GMB), was started building in late 2022, extends over the Malikha River, linking Mali Hkawm and Nam Bu Yang villages with its longest span measuring 576 ft. Following the Ma Chan Baw and Kaung Mhu Lone bridges, it stands as the third suspension bridge in the area. Located 10 miles northeast of Putao, it serves as a crucial connection between Putao and Ma Chan Baw. The area around the bridge is a vibrant multicultural community with Rawang, Lisu, Nam Bu Yang, Jinhpaw, and Du Lan residents live peacefully side by side.

The successful opening of this bridge on 22nd December 2023 is not just a testament to our collective effort, but a shining symbol of unity and love. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone involved in this monumental project. To highlight specifically, we are specially thankful for our main contributors: Mr. Simon Cheong ( SC Global), Dr. Andrew Peh (Sing Health) and Gilbert’s ACS friends for their significant contributions. The spiritual guidance from our different religious leaders has been a source of strength throughout the project. U Ram Seng has led this project with unwavering dedication. We also acknowledge the leadership and support of Myanmar Kindness Foundation leaders, U Naw San and U Naw Li. The Malihkawn villagers have showered us with support and hospitality, for which we are immensely appreciative. Last but not least, our beloved friends and family members from Singapore and Myanmar, Gilbert Chua Family and members of Myanmar Kindness Foundation for their continuous support.

Your contributions have bridged more than just physical distances; they have bridged hearts and minds.
